GreenFit Project Started

The GreenFit – Outdoor Sports for Inclusion and Green Practices project has officially started, bringing together organisations from Türkiye, Slovenia and Portugal to create more inclusive, accessible and environmentally responsible opportunities for young people through outdoor sport and nature-based activities.

Funded under the Erasmus+ Sport Programme, GreenFit focuses particularly on young people aged 13–24 with intellectual disabilities and/or disadvantaged backgrounds. The project responds to the barriers that many young people still face in accessing regular physical activity, organised sport and outdoor experiences.

These barriers may include a lack of inclusive programmes, limited access to adapted activities and facilities, insufficient opportunities for free participation, a shortage of trained educators and coaches, and social or economic disadvantages that can reduce participation in sport and community life.

GreenFit aims to address these challenges by combining inclusive sport, outdoor learning, environmental awareness and practical capacity-building.

What does GreenFit aim to achieve?

The project will develop practical and transferable resources that can be used by teachers, trainers, coaches, youth workers, volunteers, families, schools, sports clubs, NGOs and community organisations.

Through these resources and activities, GreenFit aims to:

  • increase participation in inclusive outdoor sport and physical activity;
  • support young people with intellectual disabilities and fewer opportunities;
  • promote mixed-ability interaction, teamwork and social inclusion;
  • strengthen self-confidence, well-being and active participation;
  • improve the skills of educators, trainers and volunteers working in inclusive sport;
  • encourage environmentally responsible and low-cost outdoor activities;
  • promote the use of parks, green areas and community spaces as inclusive activity environments.

Main project activities

GreenFit will follow a practical implementation process that connects research, training, outdoor activities and digital resources.

The main project activities include:

  • research and development of recommendations;
  • collection of good practices from partner countries;
  • development of an inclusive outdoor sport programme;
  • preparation of a practical guide for trainers and educators;
  • development of a Digital Toolkit;
  • capacity-building workshops for trainers, teachers and volunteers;
  • organisation of inclusive sport and outdoor events;
  • dissemination and sustainability activities.

An important part of the project will be the identification and adaptation of successful practices that already combine inclusion, outdoor activity, sport and environmental awareness. These examples will help the partnership design activities that are realistic, safe, adaptable and easy to transfer to different local contexts.

Inclusion and sustainability at the centre

GreenFit is built around the principle that outdoor sport should be accessible to everyone.

Activities will therefore be designed with attention to different abilities, communication needs, safety requirements and levels of participation. Flexible rules, visual instructions, buddy systems, small-group activities and adapted equipment will be encouraged where necessary.

At the same time, the project will promote a strong green dimension through nature-based activities, low-equipment sport models, reusable materials, environmental awareness tasks and responsible use of outdoor spaces.

By combining inclusion with sustainability, GreenFit aims to demonstrate that outdoor sport can be both socially inclusive and environmentally responsible.

Working together across Europe

The project brings together partners from Türkiye, Slovenia and Portugal, allowing organisations to exchange experience, identify successful practices and develop common resources that can be used across different educational, sport and community settings.

This international cooperation will help ensure that the project results are not limited to one local context, but can be adapted by schools, municipalities, sports clubs, NGOs and community organisations across Europe.

What comes next?

During the next stages of the project, the GreenFit partnership will collect good practices, develop the inclusive outdoor sport programme, prepare practical resources for trainers and organise capacity-building and sport activities.

The project website will regularly share updates, project results, good practices, training resources, event news and materials developed throughout the project.

GreenFit has now begun its journey towards creating more inclusive, active and greener communities through outdoor sport.
